10. Linsey Gray Creative
Instagram: @linseygraycreative
Local Retailer: Atomic Furnishing at 178 Broadway St, Asheville, NC
Following nearly fifteen years of client-focused graphic and interior design, Asheville artist Linsey Gray has recently found refuge in a renewed art practice.
Since childhood, the act of creating has served as a way to meditate and work through the inarticulate. Recently, she has shifted from realism to a more playful approach, embracing imperfection with loose, gestural marks and unpredictable mediums. Using soft pastels and homemade charcoal from collected twigs, her tonal landscapes on unfinished wood reflect the solemn beauty of WNC's landscape, highlighting that life's most beautiful discoveries often come through moments of discomfort.
Marrying fine art, surface design, and interiors, Linsey’s current offerings include original artwork and art prints, wallpaper, home textiles, silk scarves, as well as custom art and design services. Shop her collections online or in person from her vendor booth at Atomic Furnishing.
11. Knook Ceramics
Instagram: @knookceramics
Local Retailers: Garden Party and Pollen Coffee and Flowers
Diana Hoover is a full-time ceramic artist working under the studio name Knook Ceramics. She is based in Asheville, NC, where she lives with her husband and son.
Hoover enjoys experimenting with form and color and strives to make functional and sculptural ceramic objects that fit well as a cohesive collection but can also stand alone. Her inspirations include the Bauhaus, minimalist art and architecture, neo-concretism, geometric abstraction, and modern quilting. Most of her work is thrown on the wheel, and she uses a creamy white mid-range temperature clay body.
Hoover conceptualizes each piece both as a vessel and a canvas. Using the technique of hard-edge painting, she paints bold lines and patterns on each bisqued form with underglaze. Hoover appreciates how lines and patterns naturally distort when applied to the surface of a 3-dimensional and curved form, making each piece unique.
12. Bluebird Designs
Instagram: @bluebirddesignsjewelry
Local Retailers: Woolworth Walk in Downtown Asheville Art Mob in Downtown Hendersonville, and Sugarbritches in Holden Beach, NC
Meet Jessica Blissett, a skilled professional jeweler with 20+ years of experience and the creative force behind Bluebird Designs Jewelry. Specializing in unique handmade jewelry crafted from vitreous enamel and sterling silver. Her collection includes delightful blue birds and a variety of other flora and fauna designs. Jessica's goal is to offer affordable designer jewelry that brings smiles and joy to both wearers and recipients for years to come.
Her artistic journey began in Hawaii while attending the Honolulu Academy of Art, where she rediscovered her passion for enamel work and its bright colors. Continuing her education in San Francisco at the world-renowned Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts, Jessica honed her skills in jewelry fabrication. She began her career as a jeweler in Truckee, California, a small town near Lake Tahoe, taking on repairs and custom work then created her own jewelry line, Bluebird Designs, in 2010. While visiting a friend in 2013, Jessica fell in love with Asheville -she packed up and settled here less than a year later.
Jessica set up a metalsmithing studio at Riverview Station in the River Arts District upon arriving in Asheville, then in 2017 began drafting up plans for Ignite Jewelry Studios. Ignite opened its doors to the community in 2019 and offered jewelry workshops, an artisan retail gallery, and space for resident jewelers to work from. Bluebird Designs also operated out of this space and continued to spread its colorful and slightly whimsical designs around the country and world even.
Sadly the floods did not spare this high second story studio though. But much of the equipment was salvaged and she now works from a small home studio while awaiting the chance to revive the once vibrant and communal metalsmithing studio. Jessica continues to stay curious with jewelry making and metalsmithing, and adds new designs into the Bluebird Designs line when time and the process allows. Having some extra free time for creative experimentation after such devastation is her light at the end of the tunnel right now.

We are Ann and Sandy Batton and have seen Asheville through thick and thin. Our roots are dug in deep. We started our business together around the same time we met, in 2000. I (Ann) already had my eye on making pottery for a living while working 3 jobs, including at a pottery studio. Sandy was a little harder to sell that point, but he put in the effort and we made a go of it together.
Our first studio was a shack in the back yard of a rental house where we glazed in the kitchen and ate a lot of cheap dinners. In 2005 we were able to start completely making our living off pottery and got accepted into the Souther Highland Craft Guild. At first it was a lot of street shows, then we learned how to adapt with the times. We worked on developing a website, had children, moved basement studios and finally built our own in 2017!
When Covid hit, we introduced new patterns and started teaching lessons while social distancing. That changed our business immensely and we are so grateful to be a business that survived. The damage of Helene has created other challenges, but we are making it work.
