Did you know that the Asheville Botanical Gardens are located on 10 acres and are home to over 600 species of Appalachian wild flowers, flowering shrubs, and flowering trees!?

The Western North Carolina Nature Center is a 42-acre zoological park in Western North Carolina. The WNC Nature Center is home to 60 species of wild and domestic animals, and hundreds of special of plants. This includes: black bears, red wolves, river otters, red pandas, cougars, and more!

Swim at Skinny Dip Falls in North Carolina

3. Swim at Skinny Dip Falls

Located 33 miles from Downtown Asheville, Skinny Dip Falls is a 1 mile out and back trail with a waterfall and swimming hole! *Update: After Hurricane Fred, Skinny Dip Falls has changed dramatically. Please check for updates on this trail and note that the main waterfall & jumping rock are no longer.

Officially, the WNC Cheese Trail is a cooperative effort to promote the artisan cheese makers of Western North Carolina. It’s a map of 9 different cheese farms that you can tour and taste different cheeses!

You can tour this famous American author’s childhood home full of old memoirs. “Considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature, Thomas Wolfe immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe’s colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of “Altamont” Asheville, North Carolina, and “Dixieland” the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse, earned the Victorian period house a place as one of American literature’s most famous landmarks.”
